My very first Space Sim (Space Simulator) PC game was Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi back in 1991. I was visiting my software games vendor when he was playing the intro to Wing Commander II (WC2) and I was blown away by the graphics and sound! And this game was the reason why I spent about hundred dollars to upgrade 2MB RAM to my PC!
After I finished playing WC2, I purchased WC1 and enjoyed it totally along with its Secret Missions 1 & 2 expansions. And after I completed WC1, WC2 Special Ops 1 & 2 was released. True Space Sim heaven!
After Wing Commander III and IV were released (which both are absolute gems!), Chris Roberts, the creator of the Wing Commander series, left the company. Wing Commander Prophecy was released after his departure and everything about it just did not have the same flair (or dare I say Blair?) as what made the Wing Commander series great in the first place. And with that, the end of true Space Sim in the 1990s.
True Space Sim returned in the form of Freelancer in 2003 from none other than Chris Roberts!
However, it will be a long long time before we see a proper release of Star Citizen / Squadron 42 from Chris Roberts.
